Why Export?

Ninety five percent of the world's consumers live outside of the United States, so if a U.S. business is only selling domestically, it is reaching just a small share of potential customers.

Exporting also enables companies to diversify their portfolios and to weather changes in the domestic economy. By being involved in several markets, businesses limit their exposure to market shifts brought on by changes in the home economy, advances in technology, changed consumer preferences and such.

Small and medium-sized firms account for the vast majority of growth in new exporters. Since nearly two-thirds of small and medium-sized exporters only sell to one foreign market, many of these firms could boost exports by expanding the number of countries they sell to.

Overcoming the challenges involved in launching a product in a new market, managing its foreign sales effort, and delivering the product to its overseas distribution channel develops a broader employee skill set and strengthens an exporting firm's competitive position.
